Playlist: Mamamoo, Teen Top, Seo In Young, random rookies and Kisum and Krystal's tampon groove

MAMAMOO - Um Oh Ah Yeh
Mamamoo have gone too long without a song to match their considerable talent.  They are three great singers who harmonise beautifully and a good rapper - who also sings - but their last few songs have been odd missteps. There was the cheesy Piano Man - a song seemingly created for making jazz hands and a forgettable retro blues number that had a good sound but little else. You'd have to go back to early 2014 and the funky Peppermint Chocolate to find something good. But Um Oh Ah Yeh, was composed by Kim Do Hoon who wrote Some, which dominated the  Gaon chart song last year (and which I loved), and it's spunky pop fun.

TEEN TOP - Ah Ah

With EXID's Ah Yeah, Mamamoo's Um Oh Ah Yeh and Teen Top's Ah Ah, there's a lot of fumbling for words right now, but who cares when it all sounds this good. After singer Niel's solo success, Teen Top have sensibly turned to the same composer, Black Eyed Pilseung (Miss A's brilliant Only You, among several thousand hits), for the group's comeback. He also wrote their glorious melancholy dance track Missing, and there's a bit of that here too, with wistful harmonies and acoustic breaks set against a pacey beat.

AWESOME BABY- Why Should I?
Random rookies have the best songs. I fucking love this. The groove hangs off a riff plucked from stressed guitar strings; handclaps and layered vocals do the rest.

SEO IN YOUNG - Lie
Seo In Young is an old hand, once of girl group Jewelry. After a long break of working in non-music gigs, she has come back with this fantastic bitter banger.  There's western guitar twang over a swinging beat and a lively back and forth between her and rapper Kanto from Troy.

SBECK - Bomb

SBeck works a pleasing falsetto over a handful of electronic tracks that are so low-key they're almost soundscapes on what I'm assuming is his debut EP, 27. There isn't much about this guy around. A random video of him singing live - and off-key - to an adoring crowd (classmates?) a few months back turns up in a Google search but I couldn't find much else. This goes well with the minimalist shit I like, although the song I like best from the EP is Bomb, which has some of the feel of  Marvin's masterpiece I Want You.

YEAR 7 CLASS 1 - White Wind
One of these girls is way too old to be in a group called Year 7 Class 1, but it's a pretty dumb name either way. This is nice girlie pop leaning towards the J-pop idol side or S/A/W if you're a bit older. It has a pretty neat routine and I really love that they're having a crack at reinventing the tutu.

KISUM & KRYSTAL - Show Off (White Style)
Yeah that's right - it's a tampon ad - best tampon ad ever! Unpretty Rap Star alumna Kisum teams up with f(x)'s Krystal to tell the ladies to wear white even when you're bleeding, babes. The digital single has had a remix and has a bit more er, bottom end. Also: Krystal has been ditched for Kim Ho Yeon. Note to Australian advertisers: can we get some kpop stars on board? Cheers.
